PlayStation 4 se lanzó el 15 de noviembre de 2013 en Estados Unidos. La consola de Sony cumple diez años, aunque a Latam, España y el resto de Europa llegó dos semanas más tarde, el 29 de noviembre, y en Japón lo haría el 22 de febrero de 2014. El último dato de ventas de 2022 son 117,2 millones de consolas vendidas.
PS4 supuso un giro en algunas de las estrategias que había seguido Sony hasta la fecha. Tras el lento arranque de PlayStation 3 y las quejas de los desarrolladores por la complicada arquitectura del procesador Cell, Mark Cerny fue el encargado de diseñar una consola potente pero también cómoda para los estudios. Para ello se utilizó hardware conocido de AMD y arquitectura x86-64, algo que hizo la transición entre generaciones muy rápida.
Sony también implementó en el sistema operativo, mando y accesorios, diversas opciones para interactuar, compartir contenido y conectar con dispositivos como la portátil PS Vita o móviles para aprovechar el Remote Play, el streaming de la consola. Se introdujo el botón Share, para capturar imágenes y vídeos o retransmitir fácilmente. El DualShock 4 además tuvo un ligero rediseño respecto a pasados mandos, haciéndolo más cómodo.
La consola logró el apoyo de jugadores y desarrolladores, y su popularidad todavía está muy presente. Recibe una gran cantidad de lanzamientos, incluyendo ciertas superproducciones actuales que se adaptan a la anterior generación, aunque este año ya empezamos a ver el relevo generacional. Gracias a que PlayStation 5 es retrocompatible con su catálogo, muchos juegos independientes o poco exigentes en aspectos técnicos optan por lanzarse en PS4, lo que amplía el mercado de usuarios a PS4 y PS5.

Entre ellos destacan secuelas como The Last of Us Parte 2, God of War Ragnarok, Red Dead Redemption 2, Persona 5 Royal o los juegos de Uncharted, pero también títulos originales como Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima o la saga Horizon. Desde el éxito de Marvel’s Spider-Man a remakes de varios Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus o Final Fantasy VII a proyectos largamente esperados como The Last Guardian, el influyente The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt o el éxito de Monster Hunter: World, el catálogo tiene algo para cada jugador.
En esta década, PlayStation 4 recibió un modelo PS4 Slim, compatibilidad con la realidad virtual PS VR y una revisión, PS4 Pro, que en esta ocasión sí incluía mejoras en la GPU y CPU para alcanzar resoluciones de hasta 4K, tasas de framerate desbloqueadas o algunas mejoras visuales.
